Thursday 11th May 2023 - Kansas - Slight Risk

We started today in Colby after yesterdays great DCVZ event that yielded 3 Colorado Tornadoes. The low that had sat over Denver yesterday was making slow progress east today and would sit on the Kansas and Colorado Border by 03z. Todays storms would be low topped cold core Supercells and the trick would to be close enough to the Low Pressure when these storms actually initiated, the Models were having a torrid time with this event and had Initiation in various areas. I chose south of Dodge City as a starting point for some low topped north moving storms and hoped the Low would move far enough east to have an effect on these storms as they interacted with the Low. Unfortunately I got suckered onto a couple of storms that dragged us North and East towards Great Bend and took my eye off the ball with regards the low pressure area. We did manage a brief Tornado North East of Dodge City but when the main area of storms erupted over the Westkan and Cheyenne Wells area we were just too far out of reach, they quickly went severe and instantly gained Tornado Warnings with confirmed Tornadoes on most of the storms meandering around the Low. Not a great day in the office but we have 2 more attempts at these Low Topped Cold Core Storms so will not make the same mistake over the next 2 days.
